The Duomo tour with a dome climb

A guide spends two hours with you around the cathedral, in the Baptistery and in the Opera museum, then hands you over at your reserved slot on Brunelleschi's dome. Book it for that slot: when the official calendar shows grey zeros for your dates, this tour can still have places.

Duomo Tour with Brunelleschi's Dome Climb

About this experience

Walks in town meets you in front of the Lindt chocolate shop on the left side of the cathedral, and the guide holds an orange flag. On most departures the next two hours go to the cathedral exterior, the Baptistery and the Opera del Duomo Museum, with headsets for groups of five or more. The museum is the strong part. It holds the original Gates of Paradise and Michelangelo's late Pietà, and guests keep naming it as the surprise of the morning.

Then the guide walks you to the dome entrance at your reserved time, collects the headsets and leaves. The climb is self-guided on Classic departures, the listing says so in its own inclusions, and it's 463 steps with no lift. Don't hold that against this operator: even the Opera's own 50 euro dome tour sends you up alone after a talk at the base. Your official tickets arrive separately, usually the evening before, by WhatsApp, iMessage or email. They cover the Baptistery and the museum for three calendar days, and the bell tower and Santa Reparata too on visits through 31 December 2026.

Now the honest maths. The cathedral is free, and the official Brunelleschi Pass costs 30 euros for the same dome slot and monuments. Here you pay $125 for two hours of guiding and for a slot that still exists when the official shop is sold out. If the Opera's calendar has your date and you don't care about a guide, buy the pass there. The listing also says that from 1 January 2027 its pass drops the bell tower and Santa Reparata.

  • A reserved dome slot that can still be free when the official shop is sold out
  • Two hours with a guide around the cathedral, in the Baptistery and the museum
  • The original Gates of Paradise and Michelangelo's Pietà, explained
  • Groups of 15 at most, or a VIP option capped at 8
  • A 3-day pass for the monuments you visit on your own

How the day runs

  1. 10 min beforeMeet at the Lindt shop

Piazza del Duomo 15R, on the left side of the cathedral. Look for the orange flag. Drop backpacks at the free storage at Piazza del Duomo 38R first: they're refused on the dome.

  2. About 30 minCathedral exterior

The marble facade, Giotto's bell tower and the story of how Brunelleschi raised the dome without a wooden frame.

  3. About 30 minBaptistery

The octagonal Baptistery and its bronze doors. The vault mosaics sit behind restoration scaffolding until about 2028.

  4. About 1 hourOpera del Duomo Museum

The original Baptistery doors, Donatello's Penitent Magdalene and Michelangelo's Pietà, in the big hall that recreates the old cathedral facade.

  5. 45 to 60 minClimb the dome alone

The guide leaves you at the dome entrance. You go up 463 steps, past the Last Judgment fresco, to the lantern terrace, and come down at your own pace.

What guests say

★★★★★

I booked it last minute because tickets to climb the dome were sold out for the next 3 weeks. However, having a guided tour of the Battistero di San Giovanni and the museum where the guide explained things to you in detail added something extra to the experience.

After our time in the museum, Camilla took us to the "skip the line" line for the duomo, and then collected our headsets. She did not do the climb with us. The ticket for the tour allows you to go back at a later time and go inside the cathedral & crypt [...]

The climb was amazing and well worth it. What was surprising was how spectacular the museum was after the climb. The large hall at the middle of the museum along with its old brass doors of the Cathedral helped our guide frame the architectural of the building [...]

Be advised, there are a LOT of stairs and hardly any good places to catch your breath, so people who have difficulty with walking, breathing or cardio activities should steer clear of the climb.

Tips before you book

  • Your Viator voucher is not the entry ticket. The official Duomo tickets come separately the evening before: save them offline.
  • Book a morning departure in summer. Guests describe the stairwells as hot, narrow and one-way, with no turning back after the first stretch.
  • Avoid the first Tuesday of the month if the museum is your priority. It's closed, and the guided part covers the dome, Baptistery and facade instead.
  • The museum can feel rushed because the dome slot is fixed. Go back on day two or three with the pass for a slower look.
  • Cover shoulders and knees for the Baptistery. Knee-length shorts are fine, the listing says.

Frequently asked questions

Does the guide climb the dome with you?

No, not on Classic departures. The listing says the climb is self-guided unless your option says otherwise, and guests confirm the guide collects the headsets at the dome entrance. Plan 45 to 60 minutes on your own for the climb.

Is this tour worth $125 when the Brunelleschi Pass is 30 euros?

In two cases: the official calendar is sold out for your dates, or you want two hours of guiding in the Baptistery and museum. If the official ticket shop has your slot and you don't need a guide, buy the pass there. Our ticket price guide compares every option.

Do you go inside the cathedral with the guide?

Not on most departures: the tour covers the cathedral exterior. The interior is free and you visit it on your own, Monday to Saturday from 10:15 to 15:45. It's closed to visitors on Sundays.

What should I bring?

Your phone with the official tickets downloaded, ID, and clothes that cover shoulders and knees. Leave the backpack behind or use the free storage at Piazza del Duomo 38R before you meet the guide.
