Booking choice: The cathedral guided tour, from $34 per person. Check dates Tour details
Search for Duomo tickets and half the results promise to skip the line. At Florence Cathedral that phrase means less than it does anywhere else, because the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore has said so in writing. Its FAQ reads: "There is not, nor will there be, a 'skip the line' service, precisely because booking the time-slot is already a service aimed at avoiding queues." It adds that outside companies selling skip-the-line entry "are NOT authorized by Opera."
There are still queues, and some tours do shorten them. They just do it by other means. Here is what each one is.
The quick answer
No official skip-the-line ticket exists. Paid monuments run on timed slots, so a booked pass is your queue skip. The real queue is for the free cathedral, often 30 to 45 minutes and over an hour in summer. Guided tours that use a group entrance, from $34, are the honest time saver there. Anything else sold as skip-the-line is a timed ticket with a markup.

Is there a skip-the-line ticket for the Florence Duomo?
No. The Opera says there is no skip-the-line service and that third parties selling one are not authorised. Every paid entry already has a timed slot.
The logic is simple. The dome, the bell tower on the Giotto Pass and Santa Reparata on the Ghiberti Pass all run on booked time slots, capped in numbers. Hold a slot and you walk to the door at your time. The Baptistery and museum rarely queue for long. The only big line is for the cathedral, which is free and cannot be booked at all.
When a listing says skip-the-line, read it as "timed entry" or "group entrance" and check which one it means.
The real time saver at the cathedral: a guide and the group entrance, then 45 minutes inside.
Check dates for the cathedral guided tourHow long is the queue for the free cathedral?
Usually 30 to 45 minutes. In summer and on busy mornings it runs past an hour; just before the 10:15 opening it can be close to nothing.
The cathedral opens to visitors Monday to Saturday from 10:15 to 15:45, closed on Sundays. Travel writers who timed it suggest joining the line 10 to 15 minutes before opening. Weekday afternoons after 14:30 are the other quiet window, as long as you are in before 15:45. The queue is outdoors, in full sun on summer mornings.
One guest on a group-entrance tour summed it up: the tour was "Well worth paying for the tour to get easy access into the Duomo without waiting in the hot sun".

What do skip-the-line Duomo tours actually sell?
One of three things: a guide with a group entrance to the free cathedral, a dome slot the operator already holds, or both. None skips a line the Opera runs.
What each option on this site really gives you:
| Tour | From | What "skip" means here |
|---|---|---|
| Cathedral guided tour | $34 | Group entrance to the cathedral with a guide. No other monuments. |
| Dome ticket and pass | $90 | A held dome slot; guests report cathedral entry via the crypt entrance. |
| Small-group cathedral and dome | $111 | Guided cathedral entry (guests report before public opening), then a held dome slot. |
| Duomo tour with dome climb | $125 | A held dome slot and two hours of guiding. |
| Walkabout museum and dome | $137 | A held dome slot and a guided museum visit. |
| David and Duomo | $193 | Reserved cathedral entry, the north terrace and a dome slot, plus timed entry to the Accademia. |
The Opera's own guided tour of the cathedral costs 17 euros and also takes you in with a guide. It is the cheapest honest skip on the square, if a date suits you.
Inside the cathedral with a guide 15 minutes before the public, guests report, then your own dome slot.

A little. The Opera asks you to be in line 10 minutes before your slot for the ID and security check at the Porta della Mandorla.
That line moves at the pace of the metal detector and the name check, introduced on 1 March 2025. You get 5 minutes of tolerance after the slot starts. People who arrive late with a backpack lose the slot twice: once walking to the free storage at Piazza del Duomo 38/r, once at the door. Drop bags first, then join the line.
No tour gets you past that door faster. A guide can walk you there on time and explain what you are about to climb, which is a different service. More in the dome climb guide.

Are third-party skip-the-line tickets legitimate?
Some are and some aren't. The Opera can refuse tickets from unauthorised resellers, so buy from its listed partners or from the Opera itself.
The Opera's terms say staff may turn away tickets bought from unauthorised third parties. Its 2026 list of official partners includes Walks (Take Walks), Walkabout Tours and AF Tours, the partner named on the City Wonders meeting sign. Those operators issue real Brunelleschi Passes in your name.
Check one detail after booking: the voucher from the booking site is not always the entry ticket. One guest learned at the dome that they needed the official Brunelleschi Pass the operator sends separately. If yours has not arrived the evening before, call the operator, not the Opera.

From an official Opera partner: a guided museum visit, a held dome slot and a 72-hour pass for the rest.

Book the dome's 8:15 slot, join the cathedral line at 10:00 on a weekday, and see the museum and Baptistery after lunch.
- Weekdays over weekends. On Sundays the cathedral is closed to visitors and the dome only opens 12:45 to 16:30, so everyone crowds into Saturday.
- The first dome slot. At 8:15 you climb before the tour groups and come down in time for the cathedral.
- The museum. Forum regulars call it the least crowded part of the complex. Open daily 8:30 to 19:00, closed the first Tuesday of the month.
- November to February. The quietest months, with shorter lines all round. Our winter 2026-27 post has the closures.
When is a skip-the-line tour worth the money?
In summer heat, on a short stay, or when the dome is sold out. If you have a free morning in November, queue for free.
A $34 guided cathedral visit is fair money in July: you swap 45 minutes in the sun for a licensed guide and earsets. A $111 to $193 dome tour is worth it when the Opera's calendar has no dome slot left, or when you want a guide in the Baptistery and museum. It is not worth it as a way to skip a line the Opera does not have.
Every tour here cancels for free up to 24 hours before. Official passes never do. Compare prices in Duomo tickets and prices.

Frequently asked questions
Can you skip the line at the Florence Duomo?
Not officially. The Opera sells timed slots instead and says no skip-the-line service exists. A guided tour with a group entrance is the real way to skip the free cathedral queue.
What time should I queue for the cathedral?
About 10:00 for the 10:15 opening, Monday to Saturday. Weekday afternoons after 14:30 are the other quiet window, before last entry at 15:45.
Is the Duomo queue shorter on Sundays?
There is no queue because the cathedral is closed to visitors on Sundays. The dome opens only 12:45 to 16:30 that day.
Do tours skip the security check?
No. Everyone passes the metal detector, and dome visitors show ID that matches the name on the ticket.
