The Florence Duomo in winter 2026-27

Winter is the easiest time of year to get a dome slot and the hardest to get a clear view from the top. Here are the dates that matter between November and Easter, and how to plan around the early dark.

From November to March the Duomo runs on its normal timetable. There is no separate winter schedule on the official opening hours. What changes is everything around it: two maintenance weeks in November, the holiday closures, the short days and the rain.

This post lists the dates for winter 2026-27 and our advice on slots, crowds and booking.

The quick answer

The bell tower closes 9 to 13 November 2026 and the dome 16 to 20 November. The whole complex closes on 25 December, 1 January and Easter Sunday, 28 March 2027. Hours do not change in winter, but the sun sets around 16:40 in December, so book a dome slot before about 15:30 for daylight views. Outside the Christmas and Easter weeks, one to two weeks ahead is usually enough for the dome.

Which days is the Florence Duomo closed in winter 2026-27?

The whole complex closes on 25 December, 1 January and Easter Sunday (28 March 2027). On top of that: the bell tower 9 to 13 November, the dome 16 to 20 November, and the cathedral every Sunday.

The fixed closures come from the official opening hours and the Opera's FAQ. The museum shuts on the first Tuesday of every month, and the Baptistery closes at 13:30 on the first Sunday. Those dates are in the table.

Around Christmas, expect more. In the 2024-25 season the Opera also closed the cathedral to visitors on 26 December and 6 January and shortened 31 December (Opera notice, in Italian). The 2026-27 notice usually comes out in December. Plan a free cathedral visit on an ordinary weekday and you will not be caught out.

What are the Duomo opening hours in winter?

The same as the rest of the year. Cathedral Monday to Saturday 10:15 to 15:45; dome weekdays to a last slot at 18:45, Saturdays to 16:30, Sundays and public holidays 12:45 to 16:30.

The catch is the light. Sunset in Florence falls around 16:40 in mid December and before 17:30 until February. A weekday dome slot at 17:00 puts you on the lantern terrace in the dark. Some people want exactly that: the city lit up below. For the classic view of the rooftops and the hills, take a slot before about 15:30 from November to January.

Watch the public holidays too. On 8 December, 26 December and 6 January the dome runs Sunday hours, 12:45 to 16:30, and the slots are fewer. Our pick in winter is the first slot at 8:15 on a weekday: low sun, short line at security, and time for a coffee before the cathedral opens at 10:15. More on timing in the dome climb guide.

How busy is the Florence Duomo in winter?

Quiet in November, January and February. Busy from 8 December to 6 January, and again around Easter.

November is the low point of the year for crowds and the high point for rain, about 102 mm (Toscana.info). The free cathedral line, which can pass an hour in summer, shrinks to a fraction of that on a wet November weekday. January after Epiphany and all of February are the calmest weeks with decent weather.

The holidays reverse that. Italians travel between the Immaculate Conception on 8 December and Epiphany on 6 January, and the piazza fills up on weekends. Easter week 2027 runs from 21 to 28 March, with the complex shut on the Sunday itself. Treat both periods like summer.

A held dome slot, two hours with a guide and a 3-day pass. Handy in the holiday weeks.

What is the weather like for climbing the dome in winter?

Cold and damp, rarely freezing. Highs of 11 to 12 C from December to February. The stairs are indoors; the top terrace is open to the wind.

The climb warms you up fast. 463 steps inside the dome's two shells, and most people arrive at the top in a sweat. Then the lantern terrace hits you with whatever wind is blowing across the valley. Dress in layers you can open and close, not one heavy coat. Large bags and backpacks are banned on the climb, so leave the spare layers at the free storage at Piazza del Duomo 38/r.

An umbrella is fine in a small bag. Visibility is the real gamble: after rain, the air over the hills can be sharp and clear. Fog in the Arno valley can hide them completely. The figures below are monthly averages.

How far ahead should you book the dome in winter?

One to two weeks for most of November, January and February. As soon as your dates are firm for 8 December to 6 January and Easter week.

The Opera gives no official lead time. Planners suggest about a week outside May to September (Italy Planner), and that matches the winter calendar most weeks. Two rules make early booking risky: the Brunelleschi Pass is nominative, checked against ID at the door, and no official ticket can be changed or refunded.

That is where a Viator booking earns its price in winter. Every tour on this site cancels for free up to 24 hours before. If the official calendar shows a grey 0 for your day, the dome ticket and 3-day pass often still has slots, with no guide. There is no skip-the-line ticket, whatever a listing says; our skip-the-line guide explains why.

What changes at the Duomo from January 2027?

Nothing official yet. Two Viator listings say the bell tower and Santa Reparata leave their passes from 1 January 2027; the Opera's price list still includes them.

Walks in town, which runs the Duomo tour with dome climb and the dome ticket and 3-day pass, writes that from 1 January 2027 Giotto's bell tower and the Santa Reparata crypt are "no longer included", while the dome, Baptistery and museum stay in. We could not find that change on the Opera's own pages. As of October 2026 the official price list still lists the dome, bell tower, museum, Baptistery and Santa Reparata on the Brunelleschi Pass at 30 euros.

For a January or February trip, read the inclusions of any ticket on the day you book. If the bell tower climb matters to you, buy directly from the Opera, or check dome or bell tower first.
