Walkabout Florence Tours · Piazza del Duomo

Museum first, then the dome

Walkabout, one of the Opera's official partners, gives you an hour with a guide in the Opera del Duomo Museum, a stop inside the cathedral, then the 463 steps of the dome. Pick it if you want company on the climb: guests keep describing their guide on the stairs and at the top, which most dome tours don't offer.

Museum Tour and Dome Climb with Walkabout

About this experience

Walkabout meets you in front of the Lindt chocolate shop on Piazza del Duomo. The first stops are from the square: the Baptistery, Giotto's bell tower and the Loggia del Bigallo. Then you spend about an hour in the Opera del Duomo Museum with the guide. That's where the originals live: Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, Donatello's Penitent Magdalene and Michelangelo's Pietà, the one he carved for his own tomb.

After about 30 minutes inside the cathedral comes the dome, roughly an hour. The listing doesn't say whether the guide climbs, but reviews do. Guests describe their guide waiting on the stairs for slower climbers, pointing out landmarks at the top and taking their photos. On the Walks in town tour, by contrast, the guide leaves you at the entrance.

Walkabout is on the Opera's list of official 2026 partners, which matters because the Opera can refuse tickets bought from unauthorised resellers. Your ticket covers the complex for 72 hours, and one guest used it for the cathedral and crypt the next day. At $137 you pay a lot more than the 30 euro official pass. The extra buys the museum hour, a guide on the stairs and a slot when official ones are gone.

  • A guided hour in the Opera museum with the original Gates of Paradise
  • The dome climb, with the guide alongside by guests' accounts
  • An official 2026 partner of the Opera del Duomo
  • Groups of 15 at most, with headsets
  • A 72-hour pass for the monuments you skip on the day

What guests say

★★★★★

Becky was a most knowledgeable guide and explained everything to us in great detail. Although the steps up to the dome were a challenge it was well worth the effort.

Peter S. · Sep 2026
★★★★★

We had the best experience with Becky. She guided our walking tour of the Duomo. She was kind, gave excellent explanations and was thoughtful to all ages on our tour.

Erika M. · Dec 2025
★★★★★

The highlight of the museum tour was seeing the actual Baptistry doors in all their glory. The climb of the Duomo was truly exhilarating.

Deborah H. · Apr 2026
★★★★★

She made sure I didn't pass up the penitent Magdalena by Donatello and the Deposition by Michelangelo. This knowledge was imparted on me as I sped my way to my personal central focus, the Florence doors AKA Gates of Paradise. Did you know that Ghiberti spent 27 years on this?

Tips before you book

  • The listing's map pin says Piazza del Duomo 13R, but the meeting point is the Lindt shop at 15R. Walk to the shop front.
  • Arrive early. One guest went to the wrong spot and the guide had to find them at the office.
  • Slower on stairs? Say so at the start. Guests report the guide waits and lets the others go ahead.
  • Use the 72-hour pass the next day for the Baptistery, Santa Reparata and the bell tower.
  • Avoid the first Tuesday of the month: the museum, the core of this tour, is closed.

Frequently asked questions

Does the guide climb the dome with you?

The listing doesn't say, but guests do: several describe their guide helping on the stairs, pointing out landmarks at the top and taking photos. That's unusual. Most dome tours, the Opera's own included, send you up alone.

Is Walkabout an official Opera partner?

Yes. Walkabout Tours is on the Opera del Duomo's list of official partners for 2026. The Opera can refuse tickets bought from unauthorised resellers, so it's worth checking.

How fit do I need to be?

Moderately. The dome is 463 steps with no lift, narrow and steep near the top. The listing rules out travellers with back or walking problems, heart conditions and pregnant women. Our dome climb guide covers the route.

What's in the museum?

The originals from the Duomo complex: Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, Donatello's Penitent Magdalene and Michelangelo's Florentine Pietà. You get about an hour there with the guide.
