What to wear to the Duomo

Shoulders covered, knees covered, no flip-flops. Get that right and the rest is about shoes for 463 steps and a bag small enough to take up the dome.

Florence Cathedral is a working church, and the Opera enforces a dress code at the door. Staff turn away tank tops and short shorts at the door, often after a half-hour queue. The rule is short and easy to meet.

Below: the exact wording from the Opera's FAQ, where it applies, and what to wear for the climbs and the weather.

The quick answer

Cover your shoulders and your knees, and don't wear flip-flops. The rule applies to the cathedral and the Baptistery. Knee-length shorts and skirts are fine. For the dome or bell tower, wear closed shoes with grip. Bring a scarf for the doors and a small bag: backpacks are not allowed on the dome climb.

What is the dress code at Florence Cathedral?

No flip-flops, no bare shoulders and no legs uncovered above the knee. Staff can refuse entry to anyone who doesn't comply.

The Opera's wording: "entry is not permitted with flip-flops, bare shoulders or legs uncovered above the knee." Its terms add that staff may refuse access for inappropriate clothing. It applies to men and women alike.

Where does the dress code apply?

In the cathedral and the Baptistery. The Opera says the rule does not apply to the other monuments.

Officially the dome, bell tower, museum and Santa Reparata have no dress code. In practice, dress for the cathedral all day. The dome climb starts on the cathedral's north side and runs along a gallery inside it, and every tour that enters the cathedral asks for covered shoulders and knees. A City Wonders listing warns that guests who don't comply may be refused, and a Walks listing says it cannot be held responsible for anyone denied entry.

Mass is the strictest time of all. If you attend, through the south door, the Porta dei Canonici, dress as you would for any church service.

The Baptistery has the same dress code as the cathedral.

Can you wear shorts to the Florence Duomo?

Yes, if they reach the knee. Shorts and skirts that stop above the knee are refused at the cathedral and Baptistery.

Tour operators repeat the same line in their listings: shorts and skirts are fine "only if reaching the kneecap", in FlorencePass's words. Walks in town says knee-length shorts are acceptable. If you are unsure about a pair, take a light scarf or sarong you can tie around your waist at the door.

What shoes should you wear for the dome climb?

Closed shoes or trainers with grip. The 463 steps are old stone, worn smooth in places, and the last stretch is steep.

Flip-flops are banned in the cathedral anyway, and on the dome stairs they are a hazard. Sandals with a back strap work in summer; heels do not. One guest on the David and Duomo tour put it simply: "It is a good workout, so wear comfortable shoes, but your reward when you reach the top is so worth it."

You will walk a lot more than the climb. The Duomo, the Accademia, the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio are all about 10 minutes apart on cobbles.

What should you wear in summer?

Loose linen or cotton with sleeves, and knee-length bottoms. July and August highs reach about 29 to 30 C, and the stairwells hold the heat.

The cathedral queue is outdoors, often in full sun, and the dome climb is a hot, enclosed workout by midday. Wear one thin layer that already covers your shoulders, rather than a vest plus a cover-up you have to keep juggling. Take the first slot of the day, 8:15, and you climb in the coolest hour.

Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the monuments. Drink before you climb, and refill after.

Out of the sun faster: the group entrance and a guide, from $34, cathedral only.

What should you wear in winter or rain?

Layers and a waterproof jacket. October and November are the wettest months, and November averages about 9 C.

The cathedral is cool inside year-round, and the dome terrace is open to the wind. A jacket you can unzip on the stairs and close at the top is ideal. Shoulders and knees are not a problem in winter clothes, but keep shoes with grip: wet marble on the piazza is slippery.

Winter is also the quietest season. Closures and hours are in our winter 2026-27 post.

Autumn and winter: shorter queues, cooler stairs, more layers.

What bag can you take into the Duomo?

A small handbag or camera bag. Backpacks and medium or large bags are not allowed on the dome climb, and suitcases go nowhere.

The Opera bans medium and large luggage, backpacks and bags on the dome. Leave them at the free storage at Piazza del Duomo 38/r, open daily 7:30 to 20:15 for ticket holders, before your slot. The cathedral itself lets regular-sized backpacks through the metal detector, according to the FlorencePass listing, and the Walks tours say no bags of any kind on their terrace and dome route.

No tripods, no flash, no selfie drones. A phone does the job.

What should you pack for a day at the Duomo?

A scarf, a small bag, a phone with your tickets, ID for the dome and water for outside.

  • A light scarf: covers shoulders or ties round the waist. The one item that saves a wasted queue.
  • Your passport or ID card: the dome checks it against the name on your Brunelleschi Pass.
  • Tickets on your phone, plus a screenshot in case the link expires after the first scan.
  • A small bag, or none. Anything bigger goes to the storage.
  • Water, for before and after; not inside.

Frequently asked questions

Can men wear shorts in Florence Cathedral?

Yes, if they reach the knee. The rule is the same for everyone: no bare shoulders, nothing above the knee, no flip-flops.

Do I need to cover my shoulders to climb the dome?

The Opera's dress code covers only the cathedral and Baptistery, but the climb runs through the cathedral and tours insist on it. Cover up to be safe.

Can I wear sandals to the Duomo?

Sandals are fine; flip-flops are not. For the dome or bell tower, closed shoes with grip are the better choice.

Is there a dress code for the Duomo museum?

No. The Opera says the dress code applies to the cathedral and the Baptistery only.
